Make Your Goal Planning a Reality in 2010

Happy New Year! 2010

With 2010 fast approaching, I don’t know about you, but I have started reviewing my goals from last year and planning out my goals for the New Year ahead.

Whether you consistently work on goal setting on a regular basis, you never formally plan out your goals (but in your head you know what you want and don’t want!), or for whatever reason you decided that this will be the year that you put down your goals in writing and really want to do something to make them become a reality. Regardless of your situation are the one that controls whether or not your goals become a reality or only remain a dream.

While you can find a ton of books, seminars, websites, and gurus that can help you become a master goal planner, you really don’t have to make it so complicated.

Here is a quick and easy method:

  1. Step 1: Write down a list of your goals and describe them as specifically as possible
  2. Step 2: Assign a deadline to each of the goals as to when you would like to achieve the goals (remember to be realistic)
  3. Step 3: Work your goals backwards and figure out what things you need to do to accomplish each goal (how much time do you need to spend, what resources do you need, who can help you achieve your goals, what additional skill sets might you need, etc…)
  4. Step 4: Break down your goals into yearly, monthly, weekly, and daily tasks (even big goals are easier to accomplish when you break them down into smaller pieces!)
  5. Step 5: Review your goals on your progress towards achieving them on a yearly, monthly, weekly, and daily basis (are you getting closer or farther away from reaching your goal?) If you are not making the progress you like towards reaching your goals, then change you approach and see what you can do to get yourself closer to your objective.

This year, I am focusing on 7 areas to my goal planning and I thought they might be beneficial to share with you. You may want to use the same ones, one or two of them, or just create your own goals.

The 7 areas that I am focusing on  in 2010 are:

  1. Personal Goals
  2. Financial Goals
  3. Health Goals
  4. Social Goals (including family and friends)
  5. Business Goals
  6. Educational Goals
  7. Spiritual Goals

For some of you, this may be more detailed than you want to do for your own goal planning, and that’s ok.

If you really want to turn your goals into reality then you should at least write down some kind of goal (or multiple goals) for your self and work hard to review them as often as you can. Preferably first thing in the morning and right before you go to bed works best for me. These two times are when your subconscious mind is most receptive to want your mind to focus on.
